Know your genre

Writing-Guide

If you are learning to write fiction, you will most likely start with taking a course or reading books on fiction writing. What I have found is that this is not enough. It gives you a base and you will learn about the basics of story structure and overall process. However, what is more important before you start writing your story is to understand the specifics of your genre!

Each genre has its own rules and it is important to get familiar with these rules. Readers of each genre are looking for different specifics in fiction, so it is important to understand what makes the reader of a genre move.

Finally, it is also important for you to ponder on why you want to write in a certain genre. Is it because you like to read it? Is it because you have an inherent understanding of the subject? These are two different things. What is your motivation to follow a certain style of writing and what unique element can you bring to the genre you are pursuing?
