Do’s and Don’ts of first 5 pages

Writing-GuideHere’s what you need to establish in the first 5 pages of your novel

  • Great opening line/hook to grab reader’s attention
  • Establish your main characters
  • Introduce conflict which is in some way connected to the main conflict.
  • Story setting, time, season etc.
  • Make the genre obvious to the reader.

What you don’t do in first five pages is – don’t introduce any backstory. Since the reader is not yet invested in your characters, she is not going to be interested in knowing about the characters’ background.
